July 2008
Dario Meluzzi joins the group
Dario is the newest PhD student in the research group. Dario has a BS/MS in
electrical engineering and has worked a number of years in the software industry.
He comes back to the world of academia with renewed enthusiasm. His first
research project is on simulating the knotting dynamics of Newtonian strings.
June 2008
It's party time
Members of the Varghese and Arya labs had a small get-together BBQ/party. The
order of the day was eating, driking, and playing scrabble. Here are some
pictures from the party.
Hellman fellowship to Gaurav
Gaurav was awarded the Hellman fellowship that supports creative
research by junior faculty at UCSD. Many thanks to the Hellman family for their
generosity!
Joseph receives the Chancellor's
scholarship
Joseph has been awarded the Chancellor's undergraduate research scholarship
from UCSD. Many congratulations, Joseph!
May 2008
Arijit Maitra joins the group
Dr. Maitra, has joined the group as a postdoctoral fellow. Arijit
obtained his PhD from the University of Munster (Germany) on electrolyte
diffusion in polymeric systems. He will now be working on several projects
in the group dealing with RNA unzipping, histone-histone interactions, and
chromatin remodeling.
March 2008
The three Js join the group
Yes, we are referring to Jennifer Kiang, Jun Park, and Joseph Sugie, sophomores
in the bioengineering department. Jennifer will be working on RNA unzipping, Jun
will be studying attraction between like-charged colloids, and Joseph will be
developing models of chromatin assembly.
Jun receives the CALIT
scholarship
Jun has been awarded the Calit2 summer scholarship from UCSD. He will be
simultaneously working in the Arya and Palsson groups during the summers.
Many congratulations, Jun!
January 2008
Darren Yang joins the group
Darren is a junior in the chemical engineering program and is interested
in gaining some solid research experience before applying to graduate programs
in Biophysics. Darren is also a recipeint of the McNair fellowship. Darren will
be studying histone-histone interactions using molecular dynamics simulations.
Irina Dobrovolskaia joins the group
The very first PhD student in the group! Irina received her BS and
MS degrees from Russia and took some time off to take care of her two
lovely daughters. Her PhD research is on understanding how chromatin behaves
under external stresses.
