General information

The third Southern California Symposium on Flow Physics (SoCal Fluids III) will take place on the campus of the University of California, San Diego, on Saturday April 18, 2009. This  conference aims to bring together researchers from universities throughout Southern California working in all areas of fluid dynamics for a one day exchange of ideas in an informal and collaborative atmosphere.  In order to promote education and exposure, talks will be given by graduate students and post-docs, but faculty and undergraduate students are highly encouraged to attend. All universities in Southern California are welcome to participate. If you have questions, please direct them to socal09@ucsd.edu.

A flyer announcing the symposium is available here, feel free to post it.

Abstract submission
Abstracts are encouraged from graduate students and post-docs at all participating universities.  The deadline for abstract submission is March 20, 2009.
Format: The abstract should briefly describe the research to be presented.  The maximum length is two (2) pages, including figures and references.  In addition, a cover page must be included which provides all of the following details:
    Title of presentation
    Name of presenter
    Email address of presenter
University & department affiliation of presenter
Year of study, if student (e.g. 4th-year), or indicate ‘post-doc’
    Name(s) of co-authors
Abstracts can be submitted by email (plain text, rich text, pdf) before the submission deadline to socal09@ucsd.edu.
Abstract Review Criteria: Each abstract will be judged on its merit and its relevance to fluid dynamics (broadly defined).  Depending on the number of abstracts received, preference may be given to post-docs and senior graduate students.

Registration
The registration fee for the symposium will be $20, payable on the day of the meeting in cash or check made to "UC Regents". Whether you are presenting or not, please register as soon as possible. On-site lunch, beverages and snacks will be provided for all registered participants, provided they register before the April 14 deadline. In order to register, please send an email to socal09@ucsd.edu, using the phrase "So Cal Fluids Registration" in the subject line. Supply the following information in the body of the email:
   1. Full Name (in the form you want printed on your name tag)
   2. University affiliation

Directions and Parking
Direction to the UCSD campus are available on the web here. A detailed campus map is available here. The symposium will take place in the EBU II building (Engineering Building 2), home of the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering department.  This is building #610 on the campus map. Since the event is taking place on a saturday, parking is free on most UCSD lots as long as you use a "A" (red), "B" (green) or "S" (yellow) space, or a metered space. Any other space is not allowed. Details are available here. A list of campus parking lots is available here. Convenient parking lots to the EBU II building include: P502, P504, P506, P510, or the Gilman Parking Structure (most available space).  Note however that parking is not allowed any parking lot that states "enforced 24/7", so make sure the parking lot you choose explicitly states "enforced Monday through Friday" on the sign at the entrance of the lot.

Lunch
A lunch box will be provided to all registered participants.
