Solid state lighting (SSL) is the next evolution in lighting technology, after the incandescent light bulb and the fluorescent light invented decades ago.

Solid state lighting, more specifically in the form of light emitting diodes, promises to surpass fluorescent lighting in its energy efficiency and also provides more versatility in design options. Applications of SSL can be expanded from the traditional lighting applications to diverse areas such as farming, where UV LEDs have been used to induce plant growth.
