Textbook:  M. Grant and Elizabeth Gross, Oceanography: A View of Earth, 7th Edition, Prentice-Hall, 1996, available in the bookstore and on reserve in main library. 
Course description:   Introduction to the oceans and their relationship to humankind.  Selected topics include ocean related science, engineering, research, economics and international relations (emphasizing countries of the Pacific rim); living and non-living resources; coastal zone management; military and social aspects; and the sea in weather and climate. 
Grading:  Midterm exams given on Oct. 17 and Nov. 7 count 20% each.  Study questions at the end of each chapter and your term project notes should be kept in a notebook (due Nov. 29) that counts 10%.  Questions and term project may be freely discussed with other students, but copying is not permitted.  Your term project, on a selected topic related to oceanography and societal concerns, counts 15%.  A written report is due Nov. 30 (oral reports Nov. 28, 30).  The final exam is in Peterson Hall 102, 9:30 am on Tuesday, Dec. 5, and counts 35%.
