Comments about Instructor:

Encourages students to participate in class, and gives useful information for everyday life (eg., statistics, news, etc). I really like the instruction technique, it makes the class interesting. Bringing guest speakers gives the class an A+.

Gibson was very enthused & excited about class every day. I think the best teachers are those that enjoy what they teach & help their students realize why. It was obvious that he enjoys his job & the ability to teach others.

The professor was very good, and covered the class material in an effective way. He also used concepts of physics to help us get the bigger picture, but that didn't make the class harder, or the material more difficult to understand.

Professor was well prepared & genuinely cared for our success.

-came to class prepared -good lectures -helpful if I had a question

Very knowledgeable of the course material and very willing to help students to make sure they understand the information

Enjoyed your class.

He is extremely knowledgeable and experienced in the field of oceanography. His usage of so many overheads in the lectures was very helpful, but that was about the only teaching technique used.

Very interesting and very nice.

The instructor facilitated a stimulating lecture and showed interest in student's learning.

Your enthusiasm has encouraged me and expanded my interest in science & I'm not a science major. Thanks.

Gibson was genuinely interested in OUR interests in STPA. The freedom he allowed on our projects was helpful, as was his great website and the posted review material.

You can tell that he knows a lot of information about the subject material.

-Very nice and has concerns for his students learning and -Has a lot of knowledge and a definite interest in the course.

Carl Gibson is great, really relaxed, leaves the work up to you, nothing seemed mandatory, made it real fun & interesting.

-knows the material. But needs to facilitate note taking better.

Very nice, breadth of knowledge about the subjects.

Professor Gibson is very enthusiastic about the material we are studying so it makes class generally more enjoyable and interesting than others I've been in.

Professor Gibson is a great guy, but his lecture style needs some help. He rambles off on tangents. His monotonous voice often put me to sleep.

I enjoy listening to professor Gibson talk, but I didn't feel stimulated by watching slides every class period. More variety in lecturing would be useful.

A great guy, but more boring than watching paint dry ... and less colorful too.

He was extremely nice and knew material well but lectures were sooo boring!

Comments about Course:

This is a good course for a science requirement because you learn a lot more about the ocean than most people ever thought possible or ever will.

This was not difficult and was very interesting. It was one of my more enjoyable classes because the homework/reading was fun.

Really interesting-I learned a lot about the marine systems.

The class was more interesting as the quarter progressed. Although actually coming to class wasn't necessary because the tests didn't reflect any specificity to lectures, the class itself did reinforce the material presented in the book. I can truly say I have a better understanding of the oceans now.

This was an interesting course, though I felt it could use more society and less sea.

I was disappointed in the lack of depth that we explored in the realm of marine biology.

Interesting and useful information.

Great

Interesting and okay for a general education class.

I enjoyed the course and learning of all the topics under oceanography.

We learned a lot about the sea, but very little about its effect on society.

The course is interesting and fun. It helps us create a concience and true understanding of our oceans.

There was a lot of reading and busy work associated with this course.

Good course, yet I expected more regarding societal issues. Lots of work, yet the freedom of the project stimulates interest.

Tickets to Scripps aquarium were nice and my trip there was interesting and useful. It was hard to concentrate with the lights off (for transparencies and overheads) at 8 am. Very interesting topics, speakers were great, it was fun.

Best course out of the lower environmental studies courses.

Entertaining and informative
