Comments on backs of MAE/CAPE Scantron forms 2/1/2001 (week 4).

Yeah for MAE 5! I love this class so much I declared a minor in Computer Science. It is so great because I can actually write a program and it does what I tell it to do. I can use it for every day needs for organization etc. This class has given me some great life skills. Instructor knows us by name. Very efficient.

Professor Gibson obviously cares about his students. He is very nice and accessible and puts effort into learning our names and involving the class. He takes pictures of the class : ). He's also the only Prof. I've had who is totally willing to provide test materials (scantrons) that we forget. And he never complains about it!

This is my third try at programming and the prof conducts the class in a way in which I am finally able to learn. Introductory courses should walk you through the fundamentals and that is what is being done. Thank you.

Comments: class was easy at first but gets confusing and difficult. Instructor, TAs, reading, homework, and quizzes are VERY helpful. NO midterms or final is a plus too!

Professor Gibson's congenial personality provided a comforting learning environment for a subject that I'm inept in. The course is tough enough to make you scream at your computer but is rewarding when you finally understand the material. Professor Gibson's concern for our grasping of the material reminds me of a grandfather trying to teach his grandson about computers.

-the professor knows TrueBASIC very well -fair grading criteria - TA's are helpful & available

The professor is very knowledgeable and the quizzes are representative of the lectures. However, the work can be very frustrating, especially the practice programs when you have to figure out a problem never seen before. You have to actually spend a lot of extra time on the computer to really know what you're doing. I get especially frustrated with the fact that I can't do the practice programs completely by myself. I have to get all the homework done in lab section, so I can ask the TA's questions. BUT, the professor and the TA's are great & helpful.

FUN

I really like professor Gibson's teaching of MAE 5, he promotes experience through the use of the computer, answers questions, and is an overall nice person, and good teacher.

This class is taught in a manner I can understand. Much more useful than C++.

Professor Gibson shows a concern for students learning and progress. It is a joy and a relief to have him as an instructor.

The class is good and the Prof. is great. I just am not very interested in the material because it doesn't relate to my major.

I feel that a more step-by-step manner might be useful in explaining projects for this course. It seems like many things are being left out of lecture that may aid in understanding this course better.

I'm finding that the textbook is not useful for the practice program assignments. Also, it seems impossible to do the programs without consulting with the TA's.

Material is repeated enough that I feel like I am actually learning it. It's repetitive, but I think that I need that when learning this kind of info.

The HW takes way too long for a required, LD, non-major class.

Gibson is an excellent professor. He helps make the course material easy to learn.

Quizzes should reflect last week's work instead of this week's because I have not necessarily done the HW before the quiz and then I bomb the quiz.

Professor Gibson is a great MAE 5 teacher. He's very helpful & friendly & his lectures hold my attention. Quizzes are helpful for staying on top of the material.

-sometimes its a little hard to understand the professor's speech.

I think this is a good class-But its confusing at times. I don't have any prior programming knowledge & I feel that will hurt my grade.

This class is easy but not fun if you don't like computers very much.

The cape doesn't really allow for much. some of my answers would have been between a yes or no.

Gibson does not teach anything to the students-he could easily lecture on the main points of each chapter, instead he goes through programs which the students do not understand. He's vague when he needs to explain & explains things that are all knowing-i.e. the concept of double clicking. I feel that this class could be enjoyable but because of the irrelevant & boring lectures I absolutely dread this class. I think much more effort can be put in by the professor so that students learn more & to make the class more enjoyable.

I've enjoyed the class so far. The professor & TAs are extremely helpful & friendly!

Professor and TAs are good. Homework exercises can be tedious, though.

The class is all right but I don't see why psych majors need to do any of this. I think it is expecting a lot from us to come up with complicated projects on our own.
