Biography

picture of meRaymond Arnoud de Callafon was born in 1968 in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. After finishing high school in 1986, he has studied both Electrical and Mechanical Engineering respectively for two and four years at the Delft University of Technology.

In December 1992 he received his M.Sc. degree (cum laude) with Mechanical Engineering in the Systems and Control Group at Delft University of Technology. During his graduate study he has worked on the multivariable system identification of a compact disc pick-up mechanism.

In October 1998 he received his Ph.D. degree from Delft University of Technology. The research in his Ph.D. project was sponsored by the Dutch Systems and Control Theory Network, currently known as the Dutch Institute of Systems and Control (DISC). His Ph.D. research focused on the interaction between closed loop system identification and model-based control design. Techniques that have been developed were to a multivariable positioning mechanism present in a Wafer Stepper.

From April 1997 till May 1998 he worked as a Research Assistant with the Structural Systems and Control Laboratory of Prof. Skelton at the department of Applied Mechanics and Engineering Sciences at the University of California, San Diego. He worked on the modeling and control of tensile based structures, known as tensegrity structures.

Since July 1998 he works as an (acting) tenure-track assistant professor with the Dynamic Systems and Control group at the University of California, San Diego. His research interests include various topics in the field of system identification, structural damage detection, (linear) feedback control design, model/controller reduction and identification and control problems applied to real life applications.
