Welcome to the HEDP Group

The High Energy Density Physics Group at UCSD has been pursuing research on inertial confinement fusion (ICF), fast ignition, laser matter interactions, wire array z-pinches, x-pinches and neutron sources since October 2003. The group has strong simulation component and has access to Particle-in-Cell (PIC) (LSP and Osiris), radiation-hydrodynamic (H2D) and 3D resistive Magneto-Hydrodynamic (MHD) codes. These codes are used for benchmarking of experiments carried out both at National Laboratory and other user facilities, and also in the HEDP laboratory at UCSD.

The group is led by Dr. Farhat Beg , and is based in the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department , also being a member of the UCSD Center for Energy Research . The group presently consists of 14 group members, comprising two assistant project scientists, two post-doctoral fellows, five graduate students and four undergraduate students. The HEDP group collaborates with General Atomics, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Ohio State University, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in the UK, Imperial College London, Sandia National Laboratory, Nanyang Technical University in Singapore and Cornell University Ithaca, NY.
